It seems that unlike many teens who are posting nonstop on TikTok and Instagram, many adults feel uncomfortable during photography sessions.
Many people keep postponing an update LinkedIn portrait session, a family portrait session or even a fun maternity shoot.
Maybe you tell yourself you need to wait till you get rid of the 10 pounds you gained during Covid. But be honest with yourself, how long have you been saying that? If you have not lost these extra 10 pounds since 2020, don't use this as an excuse. The years are flying by quickly and you will regret not capturing the many precious moments with your kids, and let's be honest, a LinkedIn picture from 10 years ago is misleading in a way.
Let me be honest, I used to be camera shy myself. Furthermore, when someone finally took my picture, I would always look at the image with a critic eye (I still do it at times). I preferred to be the one photographing. But my years working as a photographer taught me that it is a waste of an opportunity to document special moments in our lives, and these opportunities are lost forever. Honestly, it seems like the only people who love their time in front of the camera are mostly models
So why are so many of us are uncomfortable during a photography session? There might be different reasons.
Most people who are camera shy think some parts of their body don’t look very pleasing. We are all very different and see and perceive things differently. In most cases, what you perceive as a huge defect in your appearance, is not noticeable at all. Further, if you don't like your nose, tell the photographer to avoid photographing you from your profile. If you think your legs are not as long as some of these top models', avoid wearing a short skirt to your session. The key is to wear something that makes you feel beautiful and confident.
Another common reason people feel uncomfortable in front of the camera consists of skin condition like acne or scars. Don’t worry, in post-processing when digitally editing the photos, the photographer can easily fix that.
Another reason people feel uncomfortable in front of the camera is clothing. Some people don’t know what to wear during a photoshoot to make them look better.
Avoiding wearing clothes that distract will only grant better-looking photos. Avoid big distracting logos, stripes, incorrect size, and similar colors with the location of the shoot (if shooting in a park, wearing green should be avoided). Ensuring ironing the clothes before the shoot sounds silly, but this is something often overlooked.
And of course, who doesn't remember the days of wearing braces and asked to smile to the camera. But honestly, looking back at your photos as a teen, you will find it charming. After all, who doesn't wear braces at 14?!
Remember, when you arrange a portrait session, you are not meeting a paparazzi. You are in control. Make sure you are wearing the right clothes (don't forget to iron them), schedule a hair appointment, and tell your photographer what shots you are less comfortable with. Your photographer is not there to catch you unprepared going to Target or Starbucks. Your photographer is there to make you feel beautiful and special during the photoshoot and after the session when you get the images and share them with the entire world.
