Like everything else in life, choosing a photographer to take your family photos is a matter of a personal taste. There is no right or wrong. There are many photographers out there. Start by looking at their instagram and their portfolio on their website. Do you like the images they capture? Do you like their editing style? Do the people in their pictures seem like they are having a good time?
Many photographers these days, me included, are shooting Lifestyle sessions.
A 'traditional' portrait session in a studio is very directed and is done in a controlled environment. The subject is sitting on a stool with the back straight, hands in lap, smiling sweetly at the camera. Your photographer directs you to move your head just slightly at a different angle.
On the other end, you have documentary photography, which is pretty much just letting things happen as they will and not directing anything at all. So you show up to someone's house and you take photos of a family's daily life without interfering at all. That's also not what I do.
I do Lifestyle photography. Lifestyle photography is somewhere in between portrait photography and documentary. Lifestyle is more about capturing a moment. It's about photographing emotions and connection. But the photographer doesn't just leave it up to the family to know exactly what to do, they will provide gentile direction. I do not have a studio. I shoot all my sessions outdoors or at the client's home.
Even when I pose my clients, the images captured seem very candid. I encourage my clients to move around. Movement plays a big part in lifestyle photography. A lot of times the prompts we use incorporate a lot of movement, because it looks beautiful on camera and provides something a bit different. Another benefit to keeping our subjects moving is that it gives them something to do and helps them to feel more comfortable.
Lifestyle photographers encourage their clients to look at each other and show affection to each other. Little things like touching your partner’s arm, kissing, and keeping your body relaxed are all things that appear like natural movements on the camera. The result will have the effect of intimate and candid family moments. This is very different from the traditional photos of everyone looking at the camera.
Here are some tips to decide if Lifestyle photography is right for your family:
Are you looking for photos that tell the story of your family?
Does cuddling with your family come easy for you and would you like to display such images in your family room?
You are looking for more genuine images which capture laughter and interaction between your family...
So, if you think that Lifestyle session is for you, let's connect and capture these moments.
