As a Bay Area Newborn photographer, I believe that there's something truly magical about capturing the tender moments between a dad and his newborn.
Photographing dads with their newborns is one of the most meaningful parts of a session for me. So often, dads don’t get as much time in front of the camera during those early days—but their connection is just as deep and tender. I always encourage dads to be fully present in these moments and step into the frame, because one day, their children will look back and see just how loved and held they were from the very beginning.
Let dad take the lead
Dads often surprise themselves during newborn sessions. When they’re invited to just be—to hold their baby, comfort them, or simply breathe in the moment—they naturally relax into the experience. I’ll gently guide when needed, but the most meaningful moments usually happen when dads connect with their newborns in a way that feels true to them.
While posed shots have their place, it's the candid moments that often tell the most authentic story—genuine smiles, quiet whispers, tender embraces. These are the frames that capture the heart of this season. If dad isn’t comfortable in front of the camera, that’s completely okay. There’s no pressure to pose—he can simply focus on caring for his baby as if the camera isn’t even there.
What makes baby-dad images special?
Some of the most powerful images that come from these sessions are the quiet, unscripted ones: a newborn nestled into dad’s chest, tiny fingers curled around his thumb, or the way a dad instinctively sways to calm his baby. Even a simple gaze—dad looking down at his baby with that mix of awe and love—is a moment worth preserving. These are the images that become family heirlooms, the ones their child will one day hold and say, “That’s how much I was loved.” They’re more than just photos—they’re memories in the making.
How to handle a crying newborn in a portrait session?
Newborns operate on their schedule, so be prepared to embrace spontaneity and take breaks as needed. Crying is completely normal during a newborn session—babies run the show, and that’s okay. We take things slowly, with plenty of room for breaks and cuddles. Patience is everything. These pauses often lead to the sweetest moments, like dad gently soothing the baby or holding them close—and those are some of the most meaningful shots.
If baby needs to nurse, that's the perfect time to shift focus to dad and the older sibling. Whether they’re playing, reading, or just hanging out together, it’s a beautiful window into their relationship—and often where the real magic unfolds.
How do dress up a dad for a newborn session?
Comfort is key—especially for newborn sessions where a lot of cuddling, sitting, and stretching out happens. I recommend dad wear soft, well-fitting jeans or khaki pants—something he can easily sit on the floor or relax on the bed in if we're shooting in the bedroom.
A solid-colored shirt works best. A simple button-down in a soft, neutral, or pastel shade photographs beautifully and keeps the focus on the connection, not the clothes. No need for ties or anything too formal—we want dad to look relaxed and feel at ease.
